Not that the extant graptolites were overlooked, but the connection has never been made between the fossil graptolites and their modern descendants. We now have a much better scientific basis for our interpretation and understanding of these fossils and graptolites are recognized as part of a living clade of small and inconspicuous marine organisms, the Pterobranchia.

Graptolithina is a subclass of the class Pterobranchia, the members of which are known as graptolites.

Graptolites are normally found in dark mudstones and shales, and have a shiny look to them, as though they had been drawn onto the rock with a pencil. This is how they get their name, which means 'writing on the rock'. Like corals they were colonial - each graptolite was made Graptolites fossil record is of a global scale. They are exclusively found in marine sedimentary rocks of the upper Cambrian right through the Ordovician, Silurian and the Lower Carboniferous. They are commonly found in black, organic and iron sulphide rich mudstones and shales, the so called ‘graptolite facies’ (Jstor, 2014). Our interpretations are not entirely restricted to speculation any more, and it is now accepted that the graptolites represent a largely fossil group of the Pterobranchia (Maletz, 2014a (Maletz,, Home / Common Fossils of Oklahoma / Invertebrate Fossils / Graptolites Graptolites are tiny, extinct animals that lived together in groups or colonies and shared the same skeleton, which was like an apartment building. Each animal built its own “apartment” or living chamber, and these were stuck together to make the colony.
So far their fossils are more or less limited to the St. Lawrence Formation of Afton on the Minnesota side and Osceola on the Wisconsin side (with a stray report from the Reno Member of the Tunnel City Group of Afton in Hughes and Hesselbo 1997). Graptolites are colonial animals that lived in all of the world's oceans from the Cambrian Period until the Carboniferous Period. The specimens we have for sale are from Morocco.

A possible early graptolite, Chaunograptus, is known from the Middle Cambrian. Fossil evidence of attachment to seaweeds or other floating materials does not exist. Graptolites – the unsung sailors of ancient oceans Graptolites are a group of extinct zooplankton animals lived in the earth’s oceans from 540 million years ago to 320 million years ago. In countless billions they dominated the upper layers of the ocean in tropical regions.

Graptolites are among the best zone fossils (see p. 28) and are excellent for biostratigraphic correlation. Traditionally, four sequential graptolite faunas have been recognized through the Early Ordovician to Early Devonian interval (Fig. 15.29).
